E-bike laws & rider responsibilities
E-bike laws and riding rules vary between Australian states and territories and can change over time. Before riding, it is the rider’s responsibility to confirm that their bike, its configuration and the way it is being used comply with the current laws that apply where they ride.
This guide is provided to help Evolve riders find the relevant government information. It is general information only and is not legal advice.
Check the rules in your state or territory
- New South Wales: NSW Government — Choosing a legal e-bike
- Queensland: Queensland Government — E-bike rules
- Victoria: Transport Victoria — Electric bikes
- Western Australia: WA Road Safety Commission — Bicycle riders
- South Australia: SA Government — Power-assisted bicycles
- Northern Territory: NT Government — Electric scooters and bikes

Important
Public-road and path use can depend on matters including motor power, assisted speed, throttle operation, pedals, compliance standards, rider age, helmets and where the bike is ridden. A bike or setting suitable for private-property use may not be lawful on a public road or path.
Do not modify or unlock an e-bike in a way that makes it unlawful or unsafe for the location where it is being ridden. Always follow applicable road rules, helmet requirements and local restrictions.
